 April 2011 Barrington Brief Minimize

Barringtons website

Recent Investigations Snapshot

Barringtons have been providing covert video surveillance services to the club industry since 1991.

Over the past two months Barringtons have been requested to undertake a greater number of covert surveillance operations with the consent of the court where a number of suspects have been identified manipulating the clubs point-of-sale system for their own financial benefit.

With the significant improvements in the design of point-of-sale software, it has become easy to examine transactions made by staff members and the adverse use of such transactions ie “No Sale,” which has resulted in positive identification of theft within these clubs.

A number of these matters have been referred to the police with the assistance of Barringtons.

These operations serve as timely reminders to staff that unlawful behaviour is not an accepted part of the culture of the club industry.

If you suspect internal theft and would like some advice, please do not hesitate

Facts about Workplace Bullying for Employers.

Barringtons launch Online Workplace Bullying Course at the end of May!

Victoria has introduced new laws to deal with workplace bullying as a new and specific offence under their Crimes Amendment  (Bullying) Bill 2011.

It is estimated by QLD’s Griffith University that workplace bullying affects around 3.5% of workers.

Workcover ACT places the financial cost of bullying to Australian businesses at $6-13 billion per year. This includes indirect costs such as absenteeism, labour turnover, lost productivity and legal costs.

Employers in states where workplace bullying is not specifically legislated may be liable for workplace bullying under a range of laws – namely OHS, discrimination or worker’s compensation laws.

The Oldest Chestnut in the Book....

Jason Fullerton, Security Expert, Barringtons

During my twenty years of investigation experience, I would have to say that the oldest chestnut in the book for employees in the liquor and gaming industry is the recording of transactions through the 'no sale' button or any 'zero value product' on the till ie 'staff drink'. Staff will collect money from the customer and take the money without being identified through a till discrepancy.

Twent years ago this may have been difficult to identify given; the quality of point of sale systems, CCTV systems, metering systems etc. However, there has been significant improvement in all these areas and most venues would have systems which have the capacity to identify the over use of.......

Exposing Fraud

Like most industries, the club industry needs to adopt a self-help attitude to fraud control. No longer can you rely on auditors or other specialists to uncover fraud within your club.

Evidence is that auditors uncover only about 15% of the fraud total. Almost two thirds of all fraunds committed are discovered purely by accident. In order to address your vulnerability to fraud it is critical that you assess your exposure and take steps to mitigate the risk of fraud occurring.

Barringtons have been providing consultancy to the club industry and corporate Australia for twenty years. Our experience in the area of fraud control is widely known throughout Australia.

Should you need assistance in addressing the risk of fraud in your club you should contact:
