Top 5 Challenges Women Face In Leadership

By Reyna Mendes, Learning and Development Manager, Barrington Training Services

When we think of inspirational women leaders, we think of Julia Gillard, Jacinda Arden, Quentin Bryce, Julia Bishop or Catriona Wallace . However, the celebration of women leaders should not be limited to political or business leadership. Out of the spotlight and away from media attention, women throughout Australia and the world are quietly taking on leadership roles and driving change for their colleagues, families and communities.

Here are the 5 biggest challenges facing women in leadership:

  1. Being treated equally – One of the biggest challenges is equality in the workplace. In order to go for what we want in the workplace, we need to hone in on the skills necessary to give you those opportunities. These skills are your communication skills, leadership development and emotional intelligence.
  2. Building a sisterhood – Gathering support from other women seems to be one of the biggest challenges women face. Our ability to support and empower each other starting with sharing our basic principles of who we are…our morals, values and integrity is essential. Creating networks and supporting each other through these networks is integral for our success.
  3. Generating revenue – Generating or growing revenue is another challenge faced by women. In this age of constant change, the only sure fire way to stay employable and competitive is to keep learning and updating your skills.
  4. Being confident – Most women worry about ‘being liked’. It’s only a shift in thinking, knowing that people will sometimes try to undermine you or dislike you for no apparent reason that can change perspective. Being clear about your purpose and focussing on our successes enable us to continue to build our confidence.
  5. Re-entering the paid workforce – Relaunching a career after a long break as a full time caregiver or overcoming personal challenges can be daunting. It requires combating ageism, building confidence, reconstructing a network, dusting off old skills or developing new ones and catch up on technology.
