Surveillance Cameras Will Soon Be Unrecognisable – Time For An Urgent Public Conversation

Automatic Face Recognition Is Currently The Hot Ticket In This Industry

Some consider the UK is the most surveilled country on the planet. This may or may not have been the case in the past, but there are certainly now millions of surveillance cameras in public spaces, private buildings and homes.

Automatic face recognition is currently the hot ticket in this industry, having been introduced in a number of cities around the world, in the USChinaGermany and Singapore- with the success rate of recognising faces being as low as 2%.

Face recognition highlights bigger questions around which types of surveillance cameras and systems are acceptable to society. This question is complicated by the fact that surveillance cameras are becoming more sophisticated and computerised without necessarily looking much different. There is no signage or information that tells us about their enhanced capabilities, which means the activities behind them become less transparent.

Governance and regulation is having to evolve quickly to keep abreast of this environment. To this end, surveillance cameras in England and Wales are now regulated by the specialist office of the Surveillance Camera Commissioner; along with the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Industries of Higher Risk
Some industries simply have higher security risk profiles due to the nature of their work. Examples include construction businesses, entertainment venues, industries that deal with vulnerable persons (such as aged care), and any other business that may attract adverse behaviour from those with opposing ideologies - such as RSL clubs, places of worship and sporting organisations.

Barringtons security risk management and assessment team has decades of experience working with clients of all shapes and sizes across a broad range of industries. Their arsenal of Risk Assessment Management Services includes detailed onsite inspections, location accessibility assessment and customised risk minimisation policies. They are able to provide a quick turnaround, reporting on any weaknesses in an organisation and develop valuable solutions in helping organisations develop diverse approaches to build resilience against many types of risk without resorting to facial recognition.
