According to the Maine State Nurses Association, the nurses want a third nurse on duty for the emergency department overnight shift. Staff had also experienced a spate of assaults in recent years committed by patients experiencing opioid withdrawal.

Maine Coast Hospital has promised limited daily security, an offer the nurses deem inadequate in light of the fact that some assaults have so seriously harmed nurses that they missed significant amounts of work or even quit their jobs.

In a statement, a hospital official said that the hospital continues to "negotiate in good faith" with the union for a nursing employment contract and that the hospital is committed to patient and employee safety.
