5 New Years Resolutions for Job Seekers

Kick some goals for 2021 and land your dream job!

Bring on the new year! We can all reflect on the challenges of 2020 and deeply think about what we really value in our everyday lives.

We understand the impact Covid-19 may have had on your employment status and career aspirations. Whilst some companies have reduced recruitment efforts, we have some positive news for Australia’s job market. According to the ABS (November 2020) employed increased from 90,000 people (0.7%) to 12,860,700.

Flexjobs, also highlights positive news on the job market front, stating for the first quarter of 2021, 21% of employers are planning on hiring. Whilst slightly down from last year (22%), it’s still a positive sign for the post-pandemic job market.

Whether you’re a recent graduate looking for work, seeking a career change or your employment status has been unfortunately impacted by Covid-19 and you’re on the job hunt, this is your year to kick some career goals! Here are 5 new year’s resolutions to help you find a great job.

1. Update Your Resume

Set aside some time to review and update your resume. Chances are you have some new skills and experiences to add that may be missing. It’s vitally important that there are no grammatical or formatting issues, so use programs such as Grammarly to eliminate this. You can customise your resume for applications by using keywords that align with the company’s values and qualities they’re looking for.

If the roles you are applying for are creative or design focused, showcase your skills by putting together a creative resume. You can find a range of free templates online or look on Pinterest for inspiration.

2. Define What You Want and be SMART

Use the SMART method to set your goals and clearly define what you want to embark on a targeted, effective job search. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Specific - What industry or sector do you want to work in? Do you want to stay local, or are you willing to move? What’s the maximum distance you’d travel? How much do you need to earn? What type of schedule and flexibility do you want? Would you prefer a corporate or more relaxed business environment?
  • Measurable - How many resumes will you send out per week? How many networking events will you attend each month?
  • Achievable - Do you understand the difference between your dreams and your goals? How many business connections do you want to achieve per month?
  • Realistic - What roles match your current skills and work experience? What are your strengths?
  • Timely - When is your deadline to secure a role?

3. Audit Your Social Media

You need to make a good impression and develop a consistent personal brand. Think about who you are as a professional and why others should want to employ you. You could write an elevator pitch to solidify your brand and practice your interview skills. Get active on LinkedIn and post about your achievements and work experience. LinkedIn is a great platform for networking, so reach out to your networks and let them know you’re open to opportunities.

4. Join Job Communities

Sign up to local job community groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. This is a great way to increase your chances of seeing relevant job positing and networking with the right people. If you’re interested in applying for hospitality jobs, such as bar, gaming or customer service jobs in Clubs, join the ‘Jobs in Clubs’ Facebook community.
